What is the secret of the chronometer that the Guardians are so determined to protect? Who is the Count? Can Gwyneth ever trust Gideon? Who can she trust? This is a fantastic tale of time travel and intrigue. The characters are unforgettable. Thankfully Gwen has a best friend who is just awesome. The costumes on the cover are just that, costumes, needed for them to travel inconspicuously in different time periods. As is common for time-travel books, you need to suspend your knowledge of tense and causality or your brain will melt trying to get it straight. Translated from German and set in London with references to places like Harrods. Couldn’t put these down, I had to know what was going torubytrilogy happen next.

The Floating Islands by Rachel Neumeier

floating_islands_600x880This is a fantastical tale of dragons and empires and magic, focused around a boy and his cousin. Interesting balance of societal restrictions and bold actions. The whole way through I could see it in my mind as a Miyazaki movie. If you like stories like in Spirited Away you will love this book.

This is a riveting tale of a slave who believes he is a prince, that is the way he is treated after all. The subject of research by a group of scientists in Boston, the story of Octavian is not true but could have been since there is documented evidence that this type of exploitation did occur. Absolutely fascinating and utterly compelling as a story. You are rooting for Octavian from the get go. If you think you don’t like historical fiction, read this, it will change your mind. OctavianCover

MaraDyerThis is a really disturbing psychological thriller. Is Mara crazy? Is Noah? It is a love story too but the drama is intense. Fast paced with lots of twists and surprises. Not for the faint-hearted or squeamish, the trilogy becomes more and more intense as it progresses.

The_Sea_of_Trolls_coverAlthough this begins like a fantasy “other realm” type novel it is a fantastical tale of northern England/Scotland and vikings. The main character is great, the trilogy action packed.

As the name suggests this book is about bad dreams and feeling bad. Charlie and friends are having some bad dreams that take them to very scary places. Can they be brave and face their fears? It is well written and funny. I’m looking forward to the next one! This one was a gift from Ms Ahearn who went to see Jason Segel live and bought us a signed copy!

I have recommended this before based on reviews from friends and colleagues. The beginning is a bit slow and a tad convoluted. The chapters are pretty short and alternate between the demon (sorry, djinni) and the boy. The former has a very dry sense of humor which makes a fun read. Lots of things blowing up and people being eaten, tastefully of course. Magic comes from controlling beings from The Other Place and magicians rule the country. More exciting than I expected, well worth a try.The-Amulet-of-Samarkand

Can’t tell you much without giving away the story. Weird teachers, best friends, quirky family members. Funny and quick read. It’s English so there is a headmistress and marmalade. Did I mention it is funny?boom

A fast paced, exciting novel about bizarre happenings and strong characters. A well-written nail-biter of a book. If you liked Divergent this is better (in my opinion and I liked Divergent too). UnravelingDon’t be fooled by the ridiculous cover choice, it isn’t a romance. Recommended by  fantastic student for good reason. Unbreakable is the sequel and is also sharp.

A disturbing and very tense story of a boy and his drunkard father. This mystery type novel keeps you thinking. As an adult I couldn’t decide whether I felt sorry for Martyn or was cross with him. Some obscure English cultural references but nothing context doesn’t explain.
