About Us

In an era where our country is so concerned about an obesity epidemic in children, it is time to change some of the public’s perceptions about physical education; not “athletics”, not “gym”, but the sequential educational program that teaches the how, what and why of physical education.  Physical education in Quincy does not look like what many parents and teachers participated in when they were children. Today’s students and their school environment have changed, and they have changed greatly.  Research has continued to increase awareness about the need for and purpose of physical activity and its relationship to one’s overall health.  National initiatives have brought physical education to the forefront rather than an isolated “extra” or “special class”.  Issues such as inclusion, interdisciplinary curriculums and Title IX have influenced programming considerations.  With public interest in education running high, Quincy’s physical educators are focusing on planning and teaching students about what they should know and be able to do in physical education.

Quincy’s physical education program creates an attitude that encourages our students to take responsibility for his or her own life. Quincy’s physical education teachers allow student’s to experience through their classes, a personal sense of pride about the benefits of physical activity and assist them in developing a respect for their own bodies.  This website profiles Quincy’s vision of the K – 12 physical education program, and serves as a guide as to what our students discover along their personal journey towards becoming physically educated.

OUR MISSION

Quality physical education is an integral part of the educational process in the Quincy Public Schools.  As it relates to other subject areas of the total school curriculum, physical education is unique in that it provides movement-centered and knowledge-based activities for all K – 12 students.  The focus of the physical education program is to offer activities in a safe environment which meets the physical, emotional, social and intellectual needs of our students.

A well balanced program offering diversified activities provides all students with the opportunity to develop an acceptable level of fitness, a broad spectrum of physical skills, and the knowledge necessary to use the skills and maintain fitness for a lifetime of active participation.  Positive achievement in physical education will leave the students with a legacy of success in physical activity and help to ensure that they will enjoy an active life style.

Physical Education Assessment

The goal of the assessment process in Physical Education is to accurately judge the progress of our K – 12 students in a supervised learning environment, relative to the grade by grade benchmarks set by the Quincy Public Schools Department of Physical Education Design for Learning.  The K – 12 physical education benchmarks focus on the major strands set by the Massachusetts Department of Education Health Education Frameworks.

Proper assessment helps students and teachers gauge development and identify strengths and weaknesses.  In using a variety of informal and formal assessment tools, the Physical Education teacher can plan and implement lessons that will address the needs of their individual students, giving those students the opportunity to grow in positive ways in terms of their physical health, social skills, self-esteem and moral reasoning.
