At the Wednesday, March 18 meeting, School Committee recognized:
- Outstanding Career & Technical Education Student of the Year, Henry Yip
- Quincy High School’s Skills USA district-level competition medalists: Jessica Siders, Silver Medal, Advertising Design; Brianna McCombs, Silver Medal, Criminal Justice; Leanne Gough, Gold Medal, Criminal Justice; Hanson Le, Bronze Medal, Electrical Construction Wiring; Ryan Foy, Silver Medal, Electronics Technology; James Hagborg, Gold Medal, Electronics Technology; Cristian Peguero, Silver Medal, Internetworking; Bernardo Teixeira, Bronze Medal, Technical Computer Applications; Joseph McMahon, Silver Medal, Technical Computer Applications; David Pham, Bronze Medal, Telecommunications Cabling.
- Kiwanis of Quincy, represented by President Michelle Stenberg was recognized for their gifts to Quincy Public Schools programs, both in donations totaling $25,000 and in volunteering efforts;
- Quincy Band Boosters, represented by President Lori Hagborg, announced the donation of percussion instruments to the Sterling Middle School Band.
School Committee re-opened the discussion of the 2014-2015 School Year Calendar. Given information from DESE about a project-based learning experience option to make up cancelled school days, School Committee revised the calendar to eliminate the extended days voted on at Monday’s Special Meeting. The calendar approved on March 18 retains the early release day scheduled for Friday, April 3 and the last day of school on Friday, June 26. Click here for the approved calendar. An Ad Hoc Committee will be appointed to develop and publish the project-based learning experience and updates will be shared as they are available.
The Elementary Report Card team presented on the development of the updated report card which will be implemented in Fall 2015. Grade-level teams of elementary teachers have been collaborating on this standards-based report card which will be delivered electronically through the Aspen Student Information System. In addition, School Committee appointed a new school nurse for the Wollaston Elementary School, Elizabeth Jordan and approved out of state student travel for Sterling Middle School to Canobie Lake Park and overnight student travel for Quincy High School SkillsUSA students to attend the SkillsUSA Leadership Conference.
